Part of the judging process at Northern Lights Book Awards is to read all the picture book entries out loud to children, both one on one and in groups. This way we can gauge their interest and see how they interact with the story. After all, picture books are meant to be a shared experience.
Upon arriving with a stack of books to read to four-year-old Layla, one of our junior testers, we noticed she was immediately drawn to Stories from the Bible: 17 Treasured Tales from the World’s Greatest Book. Taking it out of the pile, she thumbed through it, looking at the pictures with great intent, then settled on Jonah and the big fish as the first story she wished to hear from it. Layla was captivated. When the story was completed, she wanted to hear the same story again. In fact, she was so engrossed with Stories from the Bible, we spent half the morning enjoying it with her.
With rich visionary prose, Kathleen Long Bostrom brings seventeen beloved Bible stories, such as Joseph and his amazing coat, David and Goliath, and the birth of Jesus alive. Bostrom manages to do this with eloquent yet easy to understand language. She is a writer with true respect for her subject and for the children who will hear her words. This is evident by the fact that she never dumbs down the original meanings.
Dinara Mirtalipova’s artwork is thoroughly engaging, and children will spend hours just thumbing through Stories from the Bibleto look at them and, like Layla, will ask to hear the stories over and over again.
Stories from the Bible: 17 Treasured Tales from the World’s Greatest Book is a lovely keepsake-a treasured addition to a child’s personal library.
