Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies!
Picture Book of the Year
Authors: Megan Lacera and Jorge Lacera
Publisher: Lee & Low Books
Mo Romero is not your everyday zombie. Don’t tell anyone, but Mo loves vegetables! He hungers for delicioso meals chock-full of crispy cucumbers, tantalizing tomatoes, and perfect peppers. He simply cannot stomach typical zombie fare – such as brain stew, man-naise, and arm-panadas that his mom and dad insist he eat.
In addition to veggies, Mo craves respect from his zombie parents for his life choices. Through love and acceptance, Mo’s parents will have to determine if Mo being different is something they can swallow.
Will Mo tell his parents the truth? And will they tolerate their son’s taste for green garden delights?
Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies! by Megan and Jorge Lacera serves up a plate of humor with a side of puns and a dash of Spanish vocabulary. The illustrations and general zombie plot will have young readers relishing in a book that caters to their love of creatures that feast on human body parts. And all of this is accomplished while remaining age appropriate. Although geared for ages four to eight, adult readers will also enjoy reading this picture book. It is a difficult feat to avoid belting out a hearty laugh at the cartoony gore and zombified dish names, such as Dori-Toes (for dipping) and Arroz Con Spleens. The Romero’s story is a great way to begin conversations about family, love, acceptance, and honoring differences.
The book concludes with a few recipes that will allow families to create a culinary project for everyone’s enjoyment. After all, who could resist chips with the Romero Family’s Famous Shockamole? It’s simply delectable! Bone Appetit!
