We all know dogs are a man’s best friend.

No matter the breed, they have descended from the mighty wolf. Have you ever stopped and wondered how exactly this friendship was forged?

Using rich prose, J.E. Rogers recounts an American Native legend about how that first encounter might have occurred.

It tells how the Great Spirit was pleased with the animals he had created, but one young wolf pup by the name of Kohana gave him pause. Kohana was curious about the two-legged creature that chased after the buffalo.Seeing this, the Great Spirit forbade Kohana to go anywhere near them.

Even Kohana’s mother told him it was the law of the pack that “No wolves go near the two-legged.”
Even so, Kohana wanders too close to the creature called man. And when a large rock rolls onto his paw, Chayton, a young boy, saves his life.

Years later, when Chayton and his people are in grave danger, will Kohana be able to return the favor and save them even if it means leaving his pack forever?

As dog lovers ponder how the untamed wolf evolved into the domesticated pet they love today, they will cherish Kohana: A Native American Creation Myth almost as much as they do their four-legged best friend.
