Northern Lights Book Awards
Hide and Seek
Winner of the Board/Toddler Book category
Author/Illustrator: Polly Noakes
Child’s Play Library

Do you know a toddler who loves to play hide and seek? Well, do we have a book for you!

As part of the Northern Lights Book Awards process, every picture book is read to several children to gauge their interest. After all, picture books are meant to be shared. Every toddler we read Hide and Seek to was clearly impressed, asking to hear it again and again.

The story starts with a small girl and her forest friends frolicking in the woods who decide to play hide and seek. The girl is having difficulty finding her pals, but your child will have no difficulty spotting the wild animals in the sunshiny pictures. But wait! Is that a big, bad wolf lurking about or does he just want to join in on the fun?

Part of Hide and Seek’s appeal comes from the repetition of familiar words and phrases such as “let’s play hide-and -seek!” and “coming… ready or not!” along with the enjoyment of counting to ten with the seeker. The book also incorporates the senses of hearing, sight, and smell … “Phew! I can smell you!”
Cleary, Noakes knows the mind of a toddler.
