The Legend of Hobbomock: The Sleeping Giant
Winner of the Myth/Legend Category
Author: Jason J. Marchi
Illustrator: Jesse J. Bonelli
Fahrenheit Books
When Blackbird was a child, he would sit around a warm fire listening to his elders tell stories about their cultural heroes. One such legend was about Hobbomock, a stone giant who roamed the earth.
Hobbomock taught the Quinnipiac people to be good stewards of the earth and that all things are sacred. Because of his teachings, the birds, animals, and people spoke the same language and lived in harmony.
After many seasons, the stone giant saw there was no longer harmony. Enraged, he left the Quinnipiac people, vowing to return one day to punish them.
Blackbird has almost forgotten about Hobbomock until the day he encounters the living legend along the river’s edge. Will Blackbird be able to escape and warn his people in time?
Master storyteller Jason J. Marchi’s mystical prose, coupled with Jesse J. Bonelli’s powerful oil paintings, create an unforgettable work about this Native American legend.
If you are ever in Hamden, Connecticut, you can see the sleeping giant for yourself. Just make sure you respect the earth and its animals, so you don’t arouse his anger!
